Nashville Vacay!

Hey Y'all (southern voice)!!

Megan and I took a trip to Nashville over Memorial Day Weekend for a quick getaway. I had never been, and she loves the city. After looking over our remaining vacation days, a short trip was all we could do after using much of our vacation time for our wedding in Mexico. While we prefer to fly for most vacations, we had figured out about how much money we could spend from leftover income in a month on our trip and determined it was best to drive. We did check flights a few days before going one last time in case we could find something inexpensive.

Spending 8-9 hours in the car with some people can be a tough time, but we really enjoyed it. We talked about all different things like sightseeing, what we all wanted to do in Nashville, and how much a lot of the views seemed the same the whole way from Milwaukee to Nashville. Shoutout to big cities along the way (Chicago, Indianapolis, Louisville) changing up the sites.

While in Nashville we did the touristy things like walking Broadway and visiting many of their establishments for an amazing amount of live music. The live music was amazing. I'm not biggest country music fan, but this was really impressive. Each artist or group puts their own personal touch to create special rendition of each song. When we had enough of one artist or venue, we would leave and find another we enjoyed.

We also hit the #WhatLiftsYou butterfly wings mural, to be as basic as possible. Megan claimed that "when you're in Nashville, you just have to have their hot chicken." We had hot chicken for dinner, brunch (Hattie B's was amazing, even after a 2 hour wait in line), dinner again, and considered it for brunch on our final day, but decided against it.

In advance of going to Nashville, we discussed the possibility of attending a live recording of "The Dave Ramsey Show." For us, this is like going to Ellen, Oprah, Jerry Springer (had to), or Jimmy Fallon. We were visiting the city he records in, we follow his plan, it just made sense to go. I had an idea of what it would be like, and kept it modest to avoid being disappointed. The show was so much better than what I thought. The people working were so pleasant, he came out to visit at each commercial break to sign books and take photos, and had genuine conversation with the small audience. They had complimentary cookies that were amazing, coffee/latte and gave you a souvenir mug. Last, we got to see a couple from Anchorage, Alaska do their debt free scream! Their story starts at the 29:18 mark of the link and you can see us in the lobby with them! David and Meredith paid off $153k of student loans from undergrad. It was so great to see them so excited to prep for their interview and complete their scream. They really got into their scream and you could see how emotional it was for them to no longer have debt. Their next plan is to go on a 17-day trip throughout Europe, paid for cash. How fun is that?!

Some people think when you live on a budget it means having restrictions and not allowing yourself to have fun. We think it is anything but that. It allows us to plan for the fun we are going to have and make sure that we aren't paying for the vacation after we get home. We made some adjustments while we were there to allow for us to spend more than we planned, but all within our means and making sure our vacation didn't follow us home. This month, Megan's car needed an oil change, but then we found out she needed new tires, brakes and rotors and we drastically shifted our budget to include $808.34 in car repairs. Because of having everything planned out, we quickly shifted our plan and knew where to transfer the money.

While at the show, we bought a copy of The Total Money Makeover, Dave's signature book, at the bookstore and had Dave sign it for us. If you ever want a copy, you're welcome to borrow one, but not the signed one! I'm have a couple books loaned out to friends currently, but when I get one back I'll pass it along to others.
